We held a “Mochitsuki (Rice Cake Pounding) Event” at Nishi-Waseda International Student House!
We held a “Mochitsuki (Rice Cake Pounding) Event” recently at Nishi-Waseda International Student House to provide residents with an opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture. This event, which has been popular among dormitory residents, was once again filled with a lively and warm atmosphere throughout the day.
On the day of the event, dormitory staff members and Resident Assistants (RAs) organized the Mochitsuki experience and served freshly pounded rice cakes to residents. For many participants, it was their first time trying this traditional activity. Pounding mochi with a wooden mallet (Kine) and mortar (Usu) filled the venue with excitement and cheers. As residents called out “Yoisho! (Heave-ho!)” together during the pounding, the event naturally created a space for interaction that transcended nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
The freshly pounded mochi was served with Kinako (roasted soybean flour) and Anko (sweet red bean paste). While enjoying the taste, many residents commented that they realized how difficult mochi pounding is after trying it themselves.
Through this kind of events, Nishi-Waseda International Student House continues to offer international students opportunities to experience Japanese culture and better understand its traditions and values. The dormitory staff and RAs will keep working together with residents to support students in enjoying a meaningful and enriching student life.
